The Pet Friends book project supports of several special groups that encourage pet adoptions the greater Albuquerque area: Lucky Paws, Albuquerque Kennel Kompadres, and Sunflower Sanctuary Animal Rescue.
A portion of all proceeds from the sale of these books goes to these organizations.
Albuquerque Kennel Kompadres
Be a friend! You can be a “friend” to the City’s homeless animals. By supporting Albuquerque Kennel Kompadres, Inc. (a 501(c)(3), “friends of” the City’s Animal Welfare Department, you will be supporting the Departments programs which include humane education, adoptions, volunteerism, the City’s spay/neuter voucher program and the general care of the animals entrusted to the Department’s care. Kennel Kompadres helps to fill in the gaps in funding for the City’s homeless animals and tries to make their stay a little more comfortable. From new beds to toys and treats and from supporting enrichment programs to honoring the many countless hours of volunteer time with the animals, Kennel Kompadres is happy to fill in where the City’s budget is lacking. Lucky Paws
Opened in Coronado Center in 2007, Lucky Paws was the first retail adoption “store” for a city shelter located in a major mall in the country. When the City announced they were closing Lucky Paws in 2010, a group of animal lovers formed Save Lucky Paws to raise funds to keep it open. Once the possibility was raised, Coronado Center and Albuquerque Animal Welfare also worked to help, so Lucky Paws remained open. Because of the tight budget, Save Lucky Paws has paid rent, provided supplies for the facility and the animals, and paid for extensive repairs, remodeling, and upgrades from 2011 to the present time. An additional mission for Save Lucky Paws is to spread the word about this successful model for adopting out pets. Through books, mailings, flyers, special events, and advertising, Save Lucky Paws works to educated people about Lucky Paws. Sunflower Sanctuary Animal Rescue
Somewhere between sunrise and sunset, nestled in the East Mountains of New Mexico, that is alive with golden sunflowers rests Sunflower Sanctuary Animal Rescue, a big old dog sanctuary where these old dogs come to live out their golden years. In this home, anywhere from twenty to thirty lucky and blessed elderly, furry beings are given refuge. They were the unwanted ones. They were discarded due to illness or age, or perhaps their elderly owner became ill or passed away. These companions are given a new lease on life to feel loved, to chase rabbits and birds, to protect their home from the howling of the coyotes, to lounge in the sun, to dig as many holes as they want, or just nap on the couch. That is what they do at the Sanctuary, for it is not a kennel. Sunflower Sanctuary comes alive at 4:30am every morning with sounds of waking dogs and wagging tails. It is time for all to go outside and stretch their legs and do their morning business. Then there is the early morning nap until 6:30 which is feeding time, always their favorite time of the morning. Chicken hot dog treats help to conceal medications for those who need it, but no one is left out, for all get a taste. Every single member of the Sunflower Sanctuary family is special. They may go out the doggy door for a walk, a run, or to play with a canine brother or sister. They guard the premises at all times and are always excited to see a visitor! The ones with arthritis may prefer to enjoy one of the many soft couches or fluffy mats in the living room where there is sufficient space for all. The work never ends at the sanctuary from sunrise to sunset there is always something to do for Cynthia Dares, their protector since 2008! The sunrise gives the promise of a new day laced with hope and love. There are the sad times too, for aged and ill eventually die, and the tears are real, and create a rainbow for a new arrival. There is always a new arrival and adjustment times for all! As the sun sets at Sunflower Sanctuary, they all settle in and are ready for bedtime, exhausted from the excitement of the day and a promise of a new tomorrow laced with hope that this special place, The Sunflower Sanctuary Animal Rescue can go on forever!
